Job Duties

Job Purpose

Maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment by inspecting, adjusting and repairing HVAC equipment.

Essential Functions

Perform HVAC services

Maintaining, repairing overhauling and installing all types of HVAC equipment including split-systems, heating and package units and cooling towers, pumps, fans, air handler units, air compressors and all types of chillers including reciprocating, screw, scroll and centrifugal.
Inspect and examine malfunctioning units to determine cause of problem utilizing knowledge of mechanical,and refrigeration theory utilizing appropriate electrical,mechanical or pneumatic testing equipment.
Adjust and calibrate pneumatic,mechanical ,electric and electronic controls including replacing and setting for appropriate temperatures and pressures.
Assist in installation of major new air conditioning systems including installation of ducts,piping,various air conditioning units and related equipment.
Determining the sequence of operations required to maintain, repair and adjust air conditioning and chiller equipment by interpreting blueprints, manufactures’ instructions and written or verbal instructions.
Performing periodic or factory recommended annual maintenance inspections to ascertain the general condition of HVAC equipment per manufacture guidelines and making recommendations for repairs as necessary to keep the equipment in good operating condition.
Inspecting and examining malfunctioning units to determine cause of problem.
Adjusting and calibrating pneumatic, mechanical, electric and electronic controls including replacing and setting for appropriate temperatures and pressures.
Assist in installation of major new air conditioning systems, including installation of ducts, piping, various air conditioning units, and related equipment.

Air Conditioning Shop and Central Facilities Services Duties’

Operate as lead journeyman on large projects. Using blueprints, sketches, shop drawings, specifications and related technical data, layout and coordinate work performance of the trade.
Maintain as-built drawings of work undertaken to depict actual construction variances from design drawings.
From blueprints and/or general guidance, assisting in preparing material take-offs and labor estimates. Assisting in preparing ordering documentation and summarizing cost estimates.
Train other tradesmen in the skills of the trade.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies required are communication skills, including general ability to speak, read, comprehend and write the English language.
Possess mathematical skills to include as a minimum ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, determine linear measurements, compute areas and volumes of conventional shapes and forms, and compute approximate weight of objects.
Possess ability to climb ladders, crawl in attics and under buildings, lift and carry heavy equipment, bend, stoop and work in uncomfortable positions. Be physically capable of working under all weather conditions.
Be able to be contacted by telephone during non-working hours.
Be available for overtime work and to be on call.
Be capable of wearing protective clothing and equipment as required by the tasks being performed.
Possess a thorough understanding of air conditioning and refrigeration thermodynamic and psychometric principles, as well as an excellent understanding of air and water balance principles.
Be able to work in a safe manner and comply with all applicable OSHA and CALOSHA rules.
Present a neat and professional appearance and be capable of performing all tasks and presenting one’s self in a manner that reflects well on CFS and CUC, and of promoting the interests of these organizations throughout The Claremont Colleges.
Possession of Universal EPA and R410A refrigerant certifications.
Possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and be insurable under The Claremont Colleges’ insurance.

Work Schedule

The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the organization or business unit.
