Job Duties

Job Purpose

The Infrastructure Engineer is a full-stack engineer participating in the design, implementation, and support of all Claremont University Consortium infrastructure, both on-premise and cloud. The engineer will identify, troubleshoot and resolve highly complex systems issues efficiently. The Infrastructure Engineer applies researched and proven methodologies, principles, best practices, and validated procedures to automate systems deployments, security configurations, and perform maintenance. This position reports to the Director of Infrastructure Services who reports to the Deputy Chief Information Officer within Information Technology Services.

Essential Functions

The incumbent performs these essential duties and responsibilities.
• Architect and implement mission critical systems and related infrastructure.
• Evaluate existing infrastructure solutions and recommend improvements.
• Design, implement, and administer storage systems including cloud storage gateways.
• Architect and maintain a proactive maintenance infrastructure for all systems
• Provide written documentation for systems and related infrastructure.
• Research new technologies and analyze for fit and value to environment.
• Perform advanced configuration and automation for systems.
• Install and support third-party software applications.
• Establish and maintain resource and performance monitoring on all systems.
• Demonstrate day-to-day adherence to change control procedures.
• Ensure that system access controls and other best practice security controls are properly implemented and maintained for all systems for which employee is directly responsible and serve as resource to other staff responsible for security controls on other systems for which the organization is responsible.
• Architect relationships and dependencies between systems, enhancements to the infrastructure framework, optimization and scaling of systems
• Design and evaluate patching and maintenance systems and standards (eg. SCCM)
• Design and test new services based on new developments and trends
• Identify problems and implement complex technical solutions
• Lead project teams within and across divisions to deliver complex projects on time / budget
• Participate in IT presentations across campus and/or outside of The Claremont Colleges.
• Perform other functions, including but not limited to system troubleshooting, bug reporting/mediation, new technology research, etc.
• Participate in a team environment to complete project timelines and goals.
• Effectively communicate and collaborate in a high performance team environment.
• Contribute to diverse and cross-functional teams including teams with members from across the The Claremont Colleges and on teams with members from external organizations.
• Provide knowledge-sharing for IT Infrastructure staff and as appropriate other personnel at The Claremont Colleges.
• Work non-traditional hours and respond to on-call requests to provide 24×7 service availability.

Education

Required Education Summary

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or 6 years of experience performing the essential functions as defined above.

Preferred Education

• Microsoft and/or Linux (Redhat preferred) systems certification.

Experience

Required Experience Summary

• 8 years of experience and substantial technical expertise in one of Windows or Linux server environments with at least 3 years of experience in both..
• 5 years of experience designing, implementing and maintaining virtual server environments (e.g. VMWare).
• 5 years of experience working designing, implementing and maintaining enterprise storage systems.
• 3 years of experience deploying mission critical workloads on cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS, Azure).
• 3 years of experience deploying and supporting Office 365 services (especially email administration)

Preferred Experience Summary

• Familiarity with automation tools and techniques (e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
• Experience within higher education.
• Experience deploying and supporting Office 365 services (especially email administration)
• Experience with database servers (e.g. MySQL, MS SQL).
• Experience serving as a technical lead for a team.

Knowledge and Critical Skills

Required Knowledge and Critical Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills used to tackle complex problems.
• Expert knowledge of and experience troubleshooting network services including DNS, DHCP, and RADIUS.
• Scripting or programming skills.
• Demonstrated effective communication and collaboration in a high-performance team environment.
• Proven record of customer service excellence.
• Maintain current knowledge of security related issues that may affect systems and related infrastructure.
• Maintain current knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to IT infrastructure.

Preferred Knowledge and Critical Skills

• Advanced knowledge of directory services architecture, particularly Active Directory.
• Advanced scripting or programming skills, focused on automation and integration.
• Knowledge of and ability to utilize project management skills.

Work Schedule

The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the organization or business unit and as described in the essential functions for the position.
